Wanted: The Perfect Pet

The book Wanted: The Perfect Pet is written and illustrated by Fiona Robertson and is a picture book for kids aged 5-9. Henry really wants a dog for his perfect pet even though he has loads of frogs. He decided to advertise for a wanted pet dog. There was a duck that lived all alone in an egg house and one day he opened the advertisement and thought about how he could have a friend so he disguised himself and went to meet Henry. The duck met henry and he was happy. The “dog” was not very good at being a dog and when they were playing, his disguise fell off and he cried. Henry thought and picked up the duck and carried him home. He gave him a bath and some tea and made a list. Henry made a list about duck skills and showed it to the duck. Henry was happy with a duck and he said the duck was the perfect pet for him. The first connection I made was text to self because Henry really wanted a dog and I once really wanted to have water frogs. The second connection I made was a text to world because there is a duck this book and I always see loads of ducks in the pond. The third connection I made was text to text because I have read a book about a talking dog and just like the duck because the duck could talk. Those are all the connections I could make and I really enjoyed the book Wanted: The Perfect Pet.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind was written by William Kamkwamba and illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon. William was 13 when he was not able to go to school anymore because his family can not pay for the cost and there is very little food and water. William goes to the library and reads about windmills. He then goes back home and starts to build one with the help of his friend and cousin. They successfully built a windmill and powered light for Williams house. The first connection I made was a text to text because this book was about renewable energy and I have read lots of articles on renewable energy. The second connection I made was a text to self because I was once building a lego windmill that actually spun around just like Williams windmill. The next connection I made was a text to world because I have seen real life windmills on top of Grouse Mountain and William had made a real life windmill. Overall, I think that The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a great book for anyone to read.

After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again

The book After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again was written and illustrated by Dan Santat and is for children aged 5-8. Humpty Dumpty liked to watch birds from his favourite ledge but one day he fell off. All the kings men put Humpty back together but then he became afraid of heights and was missing out on his favourite things. Humpty Dumpty decided to make planes. He made one that took a long time and was very good. He went to throw it but it flew over the wall, so Humpty went to climb the wall. He started to climb but the higher he got the more nervous he became. Eventually, Humpty Dumpty made it to the top and was no longer scared of heights. That is when he became a bird and flew away. The first connection I made was a text to self connection. Humpty was scared to go back and try again just like how I was scared to ride my bike again after I had a very bad crash. The second connection I made was a text to world connection. Humpty’s egg hatched and he became a bird, I have seen little eggs hatch and then out pops a baby bird. The third connection I made was a text to media connection. Humpty Dumpty eventually got back up again and overcome his fear of heights and there is a song called “I will get back up again”. The song is about getting back up again from having gone through something tough, just like Humpty did. All in all, I really loved the book After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again and I think that Dan Santat did a great job on creating an amazing picture book.

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colours and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art

The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art was written by Barb Rosenstock and illustrated by Mary Grandpre and is suitable for children aged 4-8 years old. This book is about a little boy named Vasya who got a paintbrush and when he painted on his canvas, the paint box started to hiss. He made a piece that looked like music and got sent to art classes. As the years past, Vasya studied to become a lawyer but the colours still sang to him. One day Vasya went to see an show opera and the music was singing and dancing. Vasya moved to a new place and began painting the colours he heard but the teachers told him to paint normal things. Vasya did not want to be normal so he showed everyone the paintings roaring from the paint box. Vasya created something entirely new, abstract art. The first connection I made was a text to world. Vasya was told to do everything like everyone else and not be himself, this is the same as indigenous people because they were told be like everyone else, not themselves. The next connection I made was a media. Vasya was told not to be himself and be like everyone else, there is a song called “Be Yourself” which is about how you should just be yourself because that’s all you can be. The third connection I made was a text to self connection. Vasya loved to paint and be himself and I also like to paint and sometimes its just random colours but I still like to paint. The final connection I made was a text to text connection. I have read books about other famous painters for example Vincent Van Gogh. Kandinsky and Vincent are both famous artists. Overall, I really like The Noisy Paint Box: The Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky’s Abstract Art and would recommend this book to anyone who loves art.

There

The book There was written and illustrated by Marie – Louise Fitzpatrick and is for kids aged 5-7. There is about a little kid who is wondering how to get “there” and what it will be like. He is asking questions about what will he be like when he gets there, or what he will wear. And he is wondering about what it looks like, what will happen, who will be there, who will come, if he can change his mind, when will he go? I made a text to self connection because there was one time when I was in Scotland and my dad just said jump in the car so we all got in. Then he just started driving and didn’t tell us where we were going. We ended up in Glasgow at a toy store called Hamleys, I made a connection because the little kid did not know where he was going and neither did I. The next connection I made was a text to text one. I have read the magic treehouse books and every time when they are traveling in the house, Jack and Annie wonder what the place looks like, who will be there, what will happen. Just like the little kid was wondering. I also made a text to world connection. This book is about someone who is trying to find more knowledge on a place they have not been to before. This is the same as when scientists discovered the Titanic. They wanted to go there and find what it was like and what was going to happen, just like the little kid. The final connection I made was a text to media one. I made a text to media connection to the song “where the wild things are”. I made this connection because this book is about a little kid who is trying to figure out what is at the place he is going and what it will look like. The song is about the same things and what the things do. Overall, the book There is great for anyone who likes simple yet deep book and the author did a great job on creating a fantastic picture book.

Wangari’s Tree of Peace: A True Story From Africa

The book Wangari’s Tree of Peace: A True Story From Africa, is written and illustrated by Jeanette Winter. This book is about a girl called Wangari who lives in Kenya Africa and after she came back from studies, there were no trees, crops, or birds. Loads of trees had been cut down for buildings. Wangari starts to plant some trees in her yard and starts a farm of baby trees, she gives seeds to other women and they plant tiny trees in rows. The government laughed and said that women can’t do that, but they kept planting. People were cutting down the trees Wangari had planted so she stood by one tree that was still there. The police came and hit Wangari but she kept with the little tree, so women kept planting trees and soon Kenya was a forest again. One connection I made was a text to text. Wangari was told by men that she can’t do it and that it’s a man’s job, I made a connection because I read the book I Am Malala and it’s about standing up for girls when men said she couldn’t. The second connection I made was a text to world connection. I made this connection because Wangari got back and the trees were all gone, this is deforestation. Deforestation is happening in lots of places and the trees are just disappearing. The next connection I made was a text to media, I made this connection because we watched a movie about girls in Kenya and Wangari was planting trees in Kenya. The final connection I made was a text to self. A lot of people just assume boys are more athletic than girls but that not always true. Wangari was told that planting trees was a man’s job but she kept going. I connected to this because I am faster than a lot of boys but everyone says that boys are faster. The book  Wangari’s Tree of Peace: A True Story From Africa, is a great picture book and was well made.

The Fantastic Undersea Life Of Jacques Cousteau

The book The Fantastic Undersea Life Of Jacques Cousteau is written and illustrated by Dan Yaccarina. This book is about Jacques and when he was a young man he got badly injured. He swam everyday in the sea to heal. Jacques got some gear to breathe underwater and wanted to share the ocean with the world. He bought a boat and turned it into a film area, he traveled all over the world. Cousteau found lots of treasures and that is when he shared his first full colour film with the world and the people wanted to see more. Cousteau’s team kept creating vehicles to go underwater and wanted to see if people could live underwater but they couldn’t. Jacques created lots of books, films, and documentaries. While exploring in Australia he found coral reefs, when he was in France he found a sunken ship with wine in it. Fish in Africa did not swim away when Jacques was there. When they got back to the mediterranean sea it was polluted. The first connection I made was a text to media connection. I made this connection because I have seen lots of presentations about pollution online and when Jacques got back home, the ocean was very polluted. I also made a text to self connection because Jacques always went swimming and I love to swim in the ocean too, I like finding little animals to look at. Next, I made a text to text connection. This book takes place mostly underwater and I have read a book about mermaids and they are always underwater with fish and seaweed. Finally, I made a text to world connection. When Jacques found all the treasures on the sunken ship in France, this reminded me of the Titanic and how lots of people found plates, jewelry, and paintings. I really like how this book is based on real events because then kids will know that pollution is actually happening in the world, I also really liked the drawings because they were so colourful. Overall, I think that The Fantastic Undersea Life Of Jacques Cousteau is amazing because of how it tells a real story and is fun to look at.

Bat’s Big Game and Enemy Pie: Connections

Bat’s Big Game was written by Margaret Read McDonald and illustrated by Eugenia Nobati. This book is about a bat who is always switching sides of the soccer game to be on the winning team. I made a text to self connection because whenever my family plays soccer, I always like to be winning but sometimes I don’t. I also made a text to text connection because I have read about bats and all the features, that is why Bat could be on both teams. Those are the connections I made to Bat’s Big Game. Enemy Pie was written by Derek Munson and illustrated by Tara Callahan King. Enemy pie is about a boy who has his dad make a pie for his enemy but they end up being friends. I made a text to self connection because when Vedanshi first came to school, I thought she was shy quiet but then I found out that she was super funny and loud too. This is the same as when the boy made an assumption that Jeremy ross was mean but then he turned out to be nice. That is my connection to Enemy Pie.

Sir Cumference and The Dragon of Pi:A Math Adventure

The book Sir Cumference and The Dragon of Pi:A Math Adventure is written by Cindy Neuschwander and illustrated by Wayne Geehan and is a book meant for kids aged 7-10. Sir Cumference and his son Radius were eating lunch when Sir Cumference says his stomach is burning. Radius went to get help and found a potion that said “fire belly” so Radius took it to his father. Sir Cumference drank it but turned into a dragon! Radius ran back to the castle but the guards saw a dragon and told everyone about the danger. Radius called for his mother and she said come inside but then Radius said that it was his father. His mother said to hurry and find a cure because they plan to slay the dragon tomorrow morning. Radius was looking for a cure and found a poem and spoons. Radius read the poem and rushed out. He went to his father the next morning and measured the outside and across the middle. It was 22 and 7, he divided it and got 3 and 1/7! He gave his father 3 and 1/7 spoons full of the liquid and he poofed back into a human. I really like how they the author turns boring math into exciting adventure stories that kids like. I also think the drawings are really cool too. I really enjoyed this picture book, the author and illustrator did a great job.

Kindness #5

Today I made a little bed for my dog because we just got back from vacation and haven’t seen her for almost 2 weeks. We just got back from a vacation and my dad went to pick up my dog from the kennel. I thought it would be nice if I made her a little bed she can come in when she gets back so I did. I made her a little bed and when she got home she loved it and went to lay on it. I think it made my dog feel comforted because she just got back from an unfamiliar place and it’s nice to have something to make you feel comfortable. It made me feel happy because I got to see how much she liked it and made her happy. That was my fifth and final act of kindness blog review.
